Shine Tip: Seal the cuticle with an ice cube

We’ve all heard that rinsing with cold water gives your hair super shine, but that doesn’t exactly sound tempting in the middle of February. Even in August it isn’t a walk in the park to stand in the shower shivering. But you don’t have to sacrafice shine for comfort - instead of rinsing with cold water, take an ice cube and run it down the length of your hair and the cuticle will close just as well and give you great shine sans shivers.

To cover more hair in less time, keep an ice pack handy in the freezer and use that - one of those gel - filled ones you use for bumps and bruises - that will cover more of your hair in a hurry.

I’m snowed in today, which makes it a perfect day to deep condition my hair. One of my favorites is Frederic Fekkai Protein Rx Reparative Treatment Mask. Even on really long, thick hair, I just end up using a slightly larger than silver dollar size dollop of it to coat my hair from root to ends. It luxuriously coats the hair shaft and plumps each strand with moisture that lasts and lasts. If you are just doing “maintance deep conditioning”, about 30 minutes before you rinse it out with cool water. When my hair is really dry or fried, I leave it in overnight and then rinse it out in the morning with a little warmer water.

Be sure to massage some extra into your ends to keep them in top shape - it’s pretty unlikely that the oil from your scalp makes it all the way down to your ends if you have long hair.

Bonus tip: you can use this mask as a styling aid. Take a small amount and rub it between your hands and apply to wet hair like a styling cream and then blow-dry it in. I’ve done both straight and curly/wavy styles with this technique, and it’s a great way to deep condition your hair when you are on the go. My hair doesn’t look dirty or greasy with it in like this - just make sure to use a small amount, and you can adjust it each time you try it after if it isn’t enough.
